Scandinavian Christmas gifts for Kids
Remember when you were little and the giddy excitement about Christmas? That's the magic we're chasing when buying for kids – gifts that spark joy and happiness. The Scandinavian approach to children's design is about beautifully made things that encourage imagination, last longer than a fortnight, and (bonus) look nice enough that parents don't want to hide them the moment guests arrive.
From the enchanting world of Maileg (warning: may cause adults to start their own collection) to Lovi's designs that are basically art you can play with, here are some properly lovely Christmas presents that are refreshingly different, and that'll actually get used and loved. There are ideas for babies and stocking fillers in here too.
Our Scandinavian gift picks for kids
Maileg Princess & The Pea Big Sister Mouse
There's something magical about Maileg. Danish artist Dorthe Mailil has created a world that captivates children and adults alike, and this Princess and the Pea set is a particularly good one. The princess arrives in a peach gown and golden crown, inside her very own castle, complete with a stack of tiny mattresses, a pillow, a knitted blanket and (of course) a pea. It's storytelling, imaginative play and a future heirloom all in one. Suitable for ages 3 and up.
Lovi Great Green Macaw, 26cm
We love Lovi. These ingenious Finnish wooden decorations slot together like 3D puzzles, with no glue required. The Great Green Macaw is bright and makes a stunning addition to a child's room. It's the kind of gift that combines play (they'll need to assemble it) with lasting decoration. There's an even larger macaw too (34cm), as well as a red one and other birds, creatures and characters.
Lovi's smaller creatures make perfect stocking fillers. Try a tiny lamb, a hedgehog, a dachshund, a grey mouse or a brown bear. The smaller designs come in postcard-sized packaging, so they're easy to post or pop inside a parcel.
Kreafunk aLight Bluetooth Speaker, Waffle Orange
This clever Danish speaker doubles as a night light, which makes it perfect for bedtime stories and calm music. The warm waffle orange is cheerful rather than babyish, the soft light is enough to provide comfort but gentle enough not to disrupt sleep. And it's water-resistant, so it can come along on adventures too. Parents will love the design, kids will love having their own speaker. Win-win.
For the littlest ones, there's also Kreafunk's Cloudy night light: a sweet, rechargeable cloud-shaped LED lamp that stays cool to the touch, has a two-hour timer and includes a red light for night feeds. We have it in other colours, too.
Maileg Plush Sleeping Kitten, Cream Peach
Maileg's sleeping kitten has beautifully soft fur, a sleepy expression and is made for cuddling. Once you pick one up it's almost impossible to put it back down, which makes them one of the most popular toys in the shop. As a result, they don't hang around. It also comes in grey, and if you miss the chance to get one there's also an equally lovely sleeping bunny with floppy ears and a flower-shaped bow.
Flensted Mobile Scandinavian Swans
Flensted Mobiles is a Danish family firm that has been making mobiles by hand since the 1950s, and we're big fans. So much so that choosing a favourite is almost impossible. Almost. These Scandinavian swans are graceful, calm and elegant, and drift gently in the slightest breeze. Perfect above a bed (out of reach) or in a playroom, they come flat-packed and light enough to post.
Our other favourites for kids include the charming Doggy Dreams, the flying swallows are our best seller for both kids and adults (for good reason), and the balloons are bright and cheerful. But for mid-century style points, it has to be the three baby elephants in teak.
Maileg Vintage Plush Dog, Soft Sand
Looking for a new best friend? Maileg's vintage-style plush dog is soft, faithful and always up for cuddles, and at 30cm tall he's the right size to come along on adventures (or just to guard the bed). Adults and children alike love him, and he's hand washable, which any parent will appreciate. For budding pet owners, the puppy supplies set comes in a little metal suitcase with a bone, collar and lead, and is recommended for ages 3 and up.
Kay Bojesen Bojie The Skier Boy
This cheerful wooden skier was designed by the legendary Kay Bojesen in the 1940s and named Bojie after his own son, Otto, whose childhood nickname was Bo. Very fittingly, Otto was the reason that Bojesen started making toys in the first place. With his mint green tunic and bobble hat, this charming skier brings vintage Scandinavian charm to children's rooms or (let's be honest) to the shelves of design-loving adults who appreciate mid-century Danish craftsmanship. A gift with serious heritage. There's a girl skier, too (she's called Datti). We've other Kay Bojesen figures, birds and animals, too. We've even got Santa!
Maileg Rabbit Rattle Set, Mint
This sweet Maileg baby gift set is perfect for the newest little ones in your life. The soft rabbit rattle and cotton cloth come beautifully packaged in a gift box, which does most of the wrapping work for you.
Or bundle a few soft rattles together. Maileg's linen teddy rattle (dusty coral), elephant rattle (dusty blue) and mouse rattle (natural) are all perfectly sized for a baby's grip and suitable from birth. Perfect for baby showers, first Christmases, or welcoming a new arrival with something lovely that's a bit different from whatever everyone else is buying.
Pluto Set of 4 Ceramic Egg Cups Moomin Love
For the Moomin-loving child (and let's be honest, grown-ups too), these ceramic egg cups featuring Tove Jansson's beloved characters will bring gentle Moomin magic to the breakfast table – and to your whole day. The coloured insides complement the illustrations and add to the overall loveliness.
Pluto 3 Piece Winter Cookie Cutters, Gold
An excellent stocking filler for kids who like to bake (or just like to eat biscuits). This set of three gold-tone stainless steel cutters is perfect for Christmas cookies, so the first batch can be in the oven by Boxing Day – or maybe even bring them out as a surprise baking treat on Christmas Eve to help divert some of the excitement.
Pluto Moose Thermometer
A bit left field, but it's one of our favourites. This black metal moose attaches to a window with suction pads to show the room temperature, or you can reverse the pads and fix it outside, facing in, to see exactly how cold it is out there. Light-hearted, useful and compact enough to post, it's a good one for the curious child.
