Iittala Birds By Toikka Mediator Dove
Iittala Birds By Toikka Glass Mediator Dove
Joining Oiva Toikka's collection of glass birds in 2018, the Mediator Dove reveals the artist's continued experimentation with new techniqes at Iittala's Finnish glassworks as welll as offering his own interpretation of an internationally recognised symbol of peace. The body of the gentle dove is entirely transparent, the only ornamentation being the fine, white pattern of the feathers - an aptly simple, harmonious design.
Born from a happy marriage between highly skilled craftsmen at the Iittala glassworks in Finland and the creative vision of artist and designer Oiva Toikka, the Toikka birds first came to life in 1972 and have since become admired and collected by glass lovers the world over. Over the course of four decades, the prolific Toikka has designed upwards of 500 glass birds which have been hand crafted by Iittala. With a streamlined interpretation of the shape and movement of the birds, the artist collaborates closely with traditional glass makers to add bold colour and vital form to the pieces and somehow to capture the nature and character of the creatures with striking, captivating results. Every one of Toikka’s sleek glass birds is unique, and is not just an individual work of art, but is also a highly prized outcome of the respected Finnish glass blowing tradition.
