Iittala Birds By Toikka Little Tern Cranberry
Iittala Birds By Toikka Little Tern Cranberry
Oiva Toikka's simple Little Tern Cranberry design was introduced into the family of glass birds at Iittala's Finnish Glassworks in 1972. The understated form and rich, berry-red shade of the Little Tern work beautifully with the translucent glass and provide an eye-catching contrast to many of the more neutral birds in the collection, especially when it catches the light. It is difficult not to love this small, round bird that would make a vibrant addition to a collection or a great place to establish one.
Born from a happy marriage between highly skilled craftsmen at the Iittala Glassworks in Finland and the creative vision of artist and designer Oiva Toikka, the Toikka birds first came to life in 1972 and have since become admired and collected by glass lovers the world over. Over the course of four decades, the prolific Toikka has designed upwards of 500 glass birds which have been hand-crafted by Iittala. With a streamlined interpretation of the shape and movement of the birds, the artist collaborates closely with traditional glass makers to add bold colour and vital form to the pieces and somehow capture the nature and character of the creatures with striking, captivating results. Every one of Toikka’s sleek glass birds is unique, and is not just an individual work of art, but is also a highly prized outcome of the respected Finnish glass-blowing tradition.
