If we have to do housework… here are the cleaning tools we don't hate.

Scandinavian cleaning tools including Iris Hantverk dustpan and brush, Eva Solo dish brush and soap dispenser, and Aya & Ida bottle brush

We're not going to pretend cleaning is anyone's favourite pastime. But if you're going to do housework – and eventually, we all must – you might as well do it with things that are nice to look at and lovely to hold.

Here are the tools we reach for when it's time to tackle a big tidy-up. Beautiful enough to leave out, practical enough to actually get the job done, and made to last long enough that you won't be replacing them any time soon.

Iris Hantverk Tall Dustpan & Brush Set

Iris Hantverk long-handled black dustpan and brush set made in Sweden from beech and horsehair

Handcrafted by skilled Swedish artisans from beech and horsehair, this dust pan and brush set is a thing of beauty. Just focus on its handsomeness while you're sweeping up the mess someone else has made – and at least the long handle means you don't need to bend over. We've other dustpan and brush sets, too, and a whole host of wooden brushes for everything from dishes to floor scrubbing.

Eva Solo Dish Brush

This oak and nylon dish brush brings a stylish touch to the washing-up routine. The weighted base lets it stand upright on your worktop (no more brush flopping into the sink), and the replaceable head makes it a sustainable choice. Proof that even the most mundane tasks deserve decent tools. Available in black or white.

Eva Solo Squeeze Soap Dispenser

Eva Solo Eva Solo Squeeze Soap Dispenser black silicon bottle with a silver coloured top

If you're keen to switch to refillable dish soap but want something better than a plastic bottle, this is your answer. The smooth matt silicone bottle dispenses exactly the right amount of washing up liquid (or hand soap) with a satisfying squeeze and the self-sealing valve means no messy soap residue on your countertop. Refillable, practical, and rather good-looking. Even if we do say so ourselves.

Iris Hantverk Household Cloth

Iris Hantverk Household Cloth in a sunny yellow colour, folded with a branded cardboard band

Not all cleaning cloths are created equal. This absorbent linen-cotton blend from Iris Hantverk comes in a cheery yellow that's actually nice to have hanging around in your kitchen. Machine washable, in natural fibres and long-lasting, it's ideal for wiping surfaces, cleaning or dusting. Also available in other nature-inspired, Scandi colours - finally, a cloth you won't feel compelled to hide.

Aya & Ida Bottle Brush

Aya & Ida bottle cleaning brush with black silicon head and long wooden handle

Those hard-to-reach depths of water bottles and narrow jars? Sorted. This bottle brush is designed by Aya & Ida for use on their coffee cups and water bottles, but why stop there? The soft silicone bristles and rounded head navigate into tight spaces with ease, while the wooden handle makes it comfortable to use. The removable head is even dishwasher-safe – though you'll want to hand-wash the wooden handle to keep it looking its best.
